Heirloom Apple Pie Recipe

My grandma’s family-famous apple pie recipe.

- 5–7 apples, diced
- 1 cup sugar (more if tart)
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 3 teaspoons tapioca
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- pinch of nutmeg, grated
- strusel
- ¼ cup wheat berries, ground
- ¼ cup sugar
- 2.5 tablespoons butter, softened
- 1 ½ pie crust (one for bottom, one for lattice top)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Mix all filling ingredients together.
- Separately, mix the flour and sugar together until combined. Cut up butter and put it in the strusel bowl. Try to cover all butter pieces with the mixture so that as you drop the butter in, you cover it with the flour/sugar combination.
- Mix all strusel ingredients together by combining with a fork, pastry cutter or with your hands.
- Prep the pie pan with the pie crust.
- Add the filling, making sure it does not go over the sides.
- Create the lattice top starting in the middle of the pie (using the longest pieces).
- After completing the lattice, add strusel on top of the pie.
- Bake at 350 for 50 minutes, checking until the top is light brown.
